¬ NOTtoBE延伸自莎士比亞的命題 To be or not to be，在語言符號的逆轉中，創造出「否定存在卻仍然發聲」的矛盾張力。這張專輯不是重現過往的薄荷葉，而是一場「拒絕成為既定樣貌」的聲音實驗。

睽違16年，薄荷葉於2025年推出第四張錄音室作品¬ NOTtoBE，再度攜手電音鬼才YLWT（吳亞林）共同編曲及製作，並邀請電子音樂人JB（顏世傑）與 8mm Sky 主唱 PITT SUN（孫唯紘），為這張專輯注入鍵盤、Program、合成器與和聲等豐富層次，呈現與過往截然不同的音樂風貌。

YLWT表示，薄荷葉在專輯製作初期，與擅長Ambient的新古典電子音樂人JB合作，成為樂團流動的起點，為這張專輯描繪出一幅可塑的藍圖，使他得以從中解構與重組，將原本5分鐘的歌曲延展為9至11分鐘，讓這張僅有5首歌的專輯，聆聽時間達到40分鐘。

多年後再次參與薄荷葉的混音，一開始打開檔案時候看似漫長的鋪陳，最後都變成層層堆疊的享受，非常適合那些厭倦了十五秒沒中就切歌。」

錄音師蔡周翰、杉特（林維軒），奠定了器樂的基礎；配唱製作人黃小楨、混音師戴建宇、母帶工程師Brian Elgin及pada，創造出豐富廣闊的多維聽感，為作品增添前所未有的層次與張力。

在這張專輯中，薄荷葉跳脫過往Guitar Band 風格，轉向更具衝擊力的 Drum & Bass節奏核心。BASS手Jubow（高家幃）、鼓手滾滾（呂孟芝），以精湛技術突破情緒層面，為薄荷葉打開前所未有的演奏視野。

主唱林倩以細膩清晰的創作語言，為專輯注入深刻情感與敘事線索。在她恰如其分的吉他鋪陳中，鍾語桐的吉他solo得以被推展至極致，展現強烈而迷離的情感張力。

Being invited to assist in the mastering of the “NOT TO BE” EP was actually my first exposure to the Peppermints’(薄荷葉樂團) music. It was a blast to go on this musical journey with them while discussing their production vision face-to-face. My first listen through the album kept me engaged in the moment from start to finish, wondering what twists and turns each following song would take me on.  

I recall first locking in on the groove and dynamics in the drumming, followed by an appreciation of the amount of space between guitar playing. All along the way, I enjoyed so many surprising and satisfying bass melodies.  

受邀參與《NOT TO BE》EP 的母帶製作，是我第一次接觸薄荷葉樂團的音樂。這趟旅程充滿驚喜與樂趣，能與他們面對面討論創作理念，讓這次製作變得更加豐富而有層次。

第一次聆聽整張專輯時，我從頭到尾都全神貫注，彷彿跟著每一首歌在旋律與情緒的轉折中穿梭探險，期待接下來會被帶往何方。

我特別記得，最先吸引我注意的是鼓的groove與動態，隨之而來是吉他之間保留出的留白與空間感，讓整體更有呼吸。貝斯線則頻頻帶來令人驚喜與滿足的旋律走向，真是享受。

曲目1〈深灰HAZE〉

The A-Side’s opening song, “深灰”, has a lengthy and well-crafted build-up which feels deliberate, efficient (saying more with less) and focused in both playing and production decisions.

A面開場曲〈深灰〉，以一段漫長而細緻的鋪陳展開。整體的演奏與製作都非常聚焦，乾淨、克制，彷彿用極簡的語言表達更深的情感。

曲目2〈TO BE〉

The second song, “TO BE”, pulled me in with its deep atmosphere from the start and kept things dramatic with large-scale dynamics from vocals and guitars. It’s a hypnotic and slow-growing song, offering more unexpected turns in melody between guitar and vocal. I really enjoyed the playful experimentation with textures for guitars and vocals here.

第二首〈TO BE〉則從一開始就以深沉的氛圍把我拉進來，透過人聲與吉他的動態起伏，構築出戲劇般的張力。這是一首迷人且緩慢成長的歌曲，吉他與人聲在旋律上的交錯，總是出其不意。我特別喜歡他們在聲音質地上的實驗與玩心，讓整首歌層次豐富又不落俗套。

曲目3〈LOSER〉

The B-Side kicks off with a lift in mood with the more upbeat and energetic “LOSER”. This nice change of pace shows off catchy pop sensibilities in their musical vocabulary. A breath of refreshing air before the final act!

B面由〈LOSER〉開場，節奏明快、情緒提昇，為整張專輯帶來了轉折的節奏感。這首歌展現了樂團在旋律與流行感上的靈巧筆觸，是張專輯中的一口清新空氣，也為接下來的最終章做了漂亮鋪陳。

曲目4〈MORNING〉

The fourth song, “MORNING”, is my favorite on the record. Beginning with a soft and delicate presentation, spacious vocals set an introspective atmosphere decorated with slow pulses of echoes. The arrangement eventually blooms in a huge, powerful way without ever sounding too heavy.

第四首〈MORNING〉是我整張專輯中最喜愛的一首。它以柔和細膩的方式開場，空靈的人聲營造出沈靜的內省氛圍，慢拍的回音如波紋般層層擴散。這首歌的編曲最終開展成巨大的情感爆發，卻從未顯得過於沈重，張力與細緻之間取得完美平衡。

曲目5〈青春BLOOM〉

“青春”as the album closer introduces listeners to the darkest and most synthetic sonic palette on the record. A massive bassline provides a deep, visceral foundation for floating textures and mysterious melodies reminiscent of earlier Blonde Redhead.  The nearly 10-minute-long finale patiently builds in intensity and ultimately into the EP’s most unrestrained show of chaos and force. The arrangement then slowly deconstructs itself back into the dreamy, waltzing pattern from where it all began. Awesome! This album is definitely something best enjoyed as a complete, continuous listen.

壓軸曲〈青春〉帶來全專輯最暗黑、最合成音色化的音景。一段厚重的貝斯線奠定了深沉而具衝擊力的基礎，其上浮動著神秘的旋律與質地，讓我聯想到早期的 Blonde Redhead。近10分鐘的篇幅中，歌曲逐步堆疊出強烈的情緒與混亂感，最後又一層層拆解自身，回歸那夢境般的華爾滋節奏，一切彷彿又回到了原點，令人驚嘆。

這是一張非常適合完整、連續收聽的專輯作品。每一首歌之間的轉折與流動，都是這趟旅程不可或缺的一部分。
